Life before Stowe
Raised in a musical family from the West Midlands, I became a Head Chorister at Worcester Cathedral. Moving to the North-East of England, I pursued a Master’s degree in Physics at Durham University. Securing a Short Service Limited Commission in the British Army, I embarked on a global adventure and a voyage of self-discovery. Having gained valuable life experiences, I was recruited to the Fast Track Teaching programme.
What do you enjoy most about your subject?
Through the excitement of uncovering fundamental truths that govern our Universe, theoretical and practical studies in Physics combine the development of many desirable transferrable skills. It is incredibly humbling and fulfilling to apply these tools to solve real-world problems that, in turn, deepen our grasp of reality and our place within it.
What is your favourite lesson?
I most eagerly anticipate teaching my pupils about stellar lifecycles. As the renowned American science communicator, Carl Sagan, expressed it, 'The cosmos is also within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.' This profound realisation inspires awe and wonder, igniting young people’s curiosity and imagination.
What do others say about you?
A former colleague remarked that I am a “capable presence in the Physics Department” with a “wholehearted approach to practical work.” A senior science technician remembers me most for my “Astronomy input on the entrance screen” and the “permanent state of complete order” in my teaching laboratory.
Other hats
I serve as a Platoon Commander in the Combined Cadet Force (Army) and as an expedition Supervisor/Assessor for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. I am a Judge/Judge Adviser for the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation and an England Rugby coach/referee.
Passions
It is a privilege to support the Stoics’ sailing and ski racing teams, training alongside some of our School’s elite athletes. I enjoy singing with our Chapel Choir and accompanying the worship in our wider community. I am passionate about learning, volunteering with educational charities in the UK and in Romania, whilst reading for my PhD.
